Chak De India is a apparently the story of real life Indian goalie Mir Ranjan Negi, but we have seen these events unfold many times on screen that the film slots itself instantly as a league of their own.Here called Kabir Khan, pulling together a team of misfits to do the impossible which leads to win the World Championship.
This is entirely intentional, but the first time Kabir Khan (read as Shah Rukh Khan) steps into a hockey stadium and strolls through its expanse, and this image beautifully sets up the crux of Shimit Amin’s Chak De India, which is about the national sport meeting the national spirit. Kabir is a former hockey player who takes on the only-in-the-movies task of making World Championship winners in a time period of merely three months.
Chak De India really the kind of film where we want unspoken internal monologues? Somewhere along the line, I began to get the feeling that this is one time Shah Rukh really needed to have played to the gallery – for almost everyone else plays the broadest of caricatures, and the narrative itself is the broadest of contrivances.
Kabir Khan seems to belong in a different movie than one containing these beloved elements of our popular cinema, one whose eardrum-busting background score all but holds up cue cards about the emotions you’re meant to register at any point. And yet, there’s no denying that part of the attraction of Chak De India is watching it flip-flop between what it could have easily been a sporting flick and what it strives nobly to be a more grounded, and even outside the handful of beautifully conceived sequences as like the one where the coach deftly deflects a sexual proposition from one of his girls, the film is never less than watchable.The film’s true star, Jaideep’s ensured that screen-time is divided mostly evenly among the lot, yet separating a few characters for obvious star roles — Experienced, arrogant Gunjan (Real name:Shubhi Mehta); attractive,
ego driven Preeti (Real name: Segarika Ghatge); massive, Punjabi Balbir (Real name: Tanya Abrol); and defiant Komal (Real name:Chitrashi Rawat).
The underdog nature of this team emphasised brilliantly by a group of non-actors. But more importantly, there are slivers of reality amid all the sporting fantasy, touching reminders that we may be watching a fairy tale but one that is set in our own backyard.
The team of girls are exceptionally good. Characters of Preethi and Komal stand out.
CHAKDE India is a movie which makes anybody to get crazy about sport is a first thing.
Secondly the movie has got a strong message to learn for all the players who are representing India in international games that how the game is played when it has got Unity.
Overall, this movie will be a must watch for every Indian. The performances, the screenplay, the direction are just perfect. At the box office, its undoubtedly going to create history. Overseas India may get a energetic and fighter emotion of truly Indian. Coming out from cinema hall,you may get the thought… 'maybe one more time'.
